Custom Software Development FAQ

Considering custom software? Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most — about our team, our stack, ownership, hosting, and what happens after launch.

Every custom software project starts with questions, and a good partner answers them plainly. Below are the ones we hear most often — covering who does the work, the technologies we build with, software ownership, hosting, training, and long-term support. If your question isn’t answered here, get in touch and we’ll be glad to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you outsource the development to other countries?

No. Our team is entirely US based.

When should I consider off-the-shelf software over custom?

Almost always. If an off-the-shelf product meets your needs, it will probably make sense to go that route. We help in situations where the off-the-shelf solution doesn't cut it for one reason or another — a unique workflow, a need to differentiate yourself from your competition, or a requirement to integrate multiple systems.

What languages / development stack will my project be developed in?

Every custom application has unique requirements that may lend themselves better to certain languages or platforms, and we adapt as needed. That said, we're Microsoft-focused, and our core stack is MS SQL or MySQL for the database; C#, .NET, and .NET Core on the server side; and React JS, Razor, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery on the front end.

When are you not a great fit?

A few situations. First, native mobile app development (think iPhone or Android apps) — though we do build browser-based software applications that work well on mobile devices. Second, projects that require a platform or architecture outside our skillset, such as legacy Windows desktop applications, Angular.js, or Ruby. Third, standard marketing website development — it's not that we can't do it, there are simply plenty of other companies out there to choose from.

Who maintains / supports the software post development?

That depends on the nature of our agreement, your preference, and your capabilities. If you have a team that can support and continue to grow the application after the initial deployment, we're happy to hand over the reins. We also offer ongoing support and continued development options.

Do you provide training on how to use the software?

Yes — we offer multiple training options depending on your preference, including in-person end-user training sessions, remote end-user training sessions, power-user training, and pre-recorded training sessions.

Who owns the software?

It depends on the agreement — we offer both models: work-for-hire, where you own the software, and fixed-fee, where we own it.

What is your development methodology?

For work-for-hire projects we can employ either Waterfall or Agile development approaches. For fixed-fee projects we use a hybrid: expectations and deliverables need to be defined, but we take a somewhat Agile approach, understanding that reasonable changes are necessary in order to deliver impactful and valuable software.

Where will the software be hosted?

We deploy both cloud and on-prem hosted software and will make recommendations if we find you would be better suited by one over the other. Either way, we work with your IT department to deploy the application to your preferred environment — and if you need help recommending and configuring a cloud installation, we can support that as well.
